Dear Irfan sb,
First please pardon me for not showing up that regularly. I am moving out of Islamabad and the entire shifting process has marginalised my time for the net. However once I reach my new moorings things will be more plausible.
Now let me congratulate you for launching the media directory. However I think it needs some improvement. For one it needs to forms that can be filled on a voluntary basis. Given below are the formats for such forms in organisational and personal categories. I'll wait for your feedback on the viability of such a project. Please note that every item will need a separate box for data entry.
best,
Farrukh

Pitafi ! I am overwhelmed by your suggestion and this idea has clicked me so much that I will be sending this thread's link to more than a dozen journalists.

Making online forms for this project and letting anybody fill it on voluntary basis means that we will not be able to confirm the validity of the information. I dont want to face a situation when a journalist contacts us and complains that the information provided about his organization is false. I think we should do A-Z work ourselves with a team on which we have trust. The process of making such a media directory involves the following :

1)Contacting media organizations of Pakistan via various sources ( postal letter , telephone , email , fax and person) for gathering information about them. Most of these organizations may not co-operate fully if we do not know someone working for them. This means we will have to establish personal relations with these organizations before contacting them for this project.
2) Making a database and publishing it online. We should add a search box with this directory. If a user comes and enters "The News" in the search box, he/she will get the list of all journalists in our database that work for The News.

Please correct me if I am thinking in a wrong direction.

Thank You

Sir, today we are living in 21st century. Our children are seeking more and more knowledge and information. Therefore, when we talk about a Journalist we should keep in our mind that on the other side is also a Journalist who is looking the all things on Sahafionline. Formats for the development of media directory should be more informative and Pitafi idea is not bad.

Well dear Irfan,
Before I try to make my point further I must establish my credentials. I have been working recently with an international NGO working to empower media. During that time the idea of developing a Media directory clicked me. My inspiration were two organisations. NGO Resource Center which has an excellent directory of the Pakistan-based NGOs and PILDAT which has developed a directory of the MNAs of the country. Both of these organisations certainly followed your suggested pattern. So naturally our first approach was the same. But let me tell you we failed because of two reasons. First that the NGO community and the members of the national assembly are two groups with limited members and easily identifiable networks whereas owing to the priorities of the media groups lists of the staff are not organisationally available. Second journalists are a busy lot and owing to the deadline pressures they may not be able to fill the details for others. I have considerable rapport with uncountable journalists and almost all media groups but this way things do not move a bit. The best thing then is the voluntary submission of the form. That doesnt mean you have to include in your database or publish online immediately. We have asked for the contact info in the forms. We can contact them to ascertain their facts. Further we can aslo introduce the requirement of two referees or proposer and seconder just like in the press clubs. But the important thing is for us to kick start it at once. Once we have our data you don't know how effectual this effort will be. As for the wrong data being fed, let me assure you that in such forums wrong info cannot stay for long. Just try one thing. Go to Wikipedia and insert some smart mistakes in one of the articles. Within one hour you'll see all information corrected. This is the fruit of participation. This can be done even though we are human and some mistakes are possible.

offcourse this is a too good Idea. Kuch Friends Negative things or ERROR kay baray mai Soch Rahay hai. ERRORS Tu Her Kaam, HEr Project mai Possible hai. Lakin Agar Koi Positive Kaam Karna Chah Raha then We should Help Him. Errors and Problems ko Door kia ja Sakta hai.Lakin 1st it should start.

Pitafi I am now convinced that filling online forms on an open/voluntary basis is the way to go for media directory project. We will do some coding in HTML and make some forms, its easy. We will then link these HTML forms with a back end database. I hope you will keep guiding us.

Thank You
